By Bath artist Anna Robson, "Abstract Africa" is one of the few African themed lions in the Lions of Bath pride. Decorated with traditional African designs and in the tones of the glorious sunsets over the African plains, "Abstract Africa" is painted with scenes of rural Africa and evokes the mood and mysteries of the lion's natural habitat. He also reminds us that, although Europe has adopted the lion as its own symbol of strength and royalty, the species originated on the plains of Africa and is deeply entwined with the ancient history of the continent. Lions are becoming increasingly endangered in Africa, where from a population of 200,000 lions in the 1960s, there are now thought to be only 20,000 remaining - even fewer than the polar bear - making this beautiful African lion a work of art to be cherished - Sponsored by Andrews Estate Agents, Abstract Africa is a true the King of the Beasts.
LIONS OF BATH 2010
A majestic pride of 100 individually decorated, life-size lion sculptures filled the streets of the World Heritage City of Bath this summer in a colourful, public art event to raise funds for charity and bring a smile to the faces of residents and visitors alike.
The giant pride was decorated by 100 talented artists, celebrities and craftspeople from Bath, London, Scotland and as far afield as France and Russia, who stretched their skills and imagination to produce fabulously eye-catching artworks from the beautiful to the bizarre.
The limited edition 6ft, individually decorated lion sculptures were displayed in prime locations across the city, by the 16th century Bath Abbey, in the Roman Baths, in front of the Royal Crescent, in The Circus, in shops, parks and even up the rooftops, delighting all who had the pleasure to see them "in the wild" and now available for sale to lion fans of all ages everywhere!
DETAILS
The lions are 1.7m long, 45cms wide, 80cms high at the shoulders and 115cms high to the top of the head. The limited edition sculptures were made in Britain from reinforced polyester resin (GRP) by one of the world's leading specialist GRP manufacturers. They are extremely strong and have successfully withstood three months of intense attention on the streets of Bath, with a number of adults sitting on them at one time (although climbing or sitting on the lions is not recommended and particular care should be taken in the presence of children, as falling any height can be dangerous). The lions weigh approx 25kgs and can easily be carried by two people, or by one person if carried up on the shoulder. Mosaic lions and those with attachments will weigh considerably more. The sculptures have a steel thread inserted into the bottom of their feet into which a rod can be inserted for fixing to a plinth. The lions have been coated with a number of layers of vanish and are suitable for display outdoors (unless specifically mentioned in the individual descriptions. Please look out for those that are for indoor display only). Elegant stone plinths measuring approx 140cms x 600cms, which have been tailor-made for the Lions of Bath event to secure the lions in public spaces are available at a cost of £250 (see the photograph of "Zillion" lion on one of the Bath stone-coloured plinths at www.lionsofbath.com/news)

This beautifully painted lion is a triumph. The skills and techniques used by his artist Jane Robinson were so sought after by lion sponsors that Jane was commissioned to paint two of the Lions of Bath pride. As his name implies, "Aesop" reflects the wonderful lion stories featured in Aesop's Fables, and the lion is painted in a stunning verdigris style, with fabulously detailed images of tiny mice climbing up vines up his legs and across his body and mane. Finely painted butterflies fly across his forehead and gently resting on a paw are tiny birds and eggs in a delicately painted birds nest. In this case the story is The Lion and the Mouse, about a little mouse who accidentally woke a sleeping lion who then threatened to eat him for disturbing his sleep. "Pardon, O King," cried the little Mouse: "forgive me this time, I shall never forget it: who knows but what I may be able to do you a turn some of these days?" The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go. Some time after, the Lion was caught in a trap and the hunters, who desired to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a wagon to carry him on. Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts. "Was I not right?" said the little Mouse. The moral of this story is Little friends may prove great friends, which Jane has painted on trompe l'oeuil metal display tags on each of the lion's flanks. This lovely lion was sponsored by the Norie Trust.

A beautiful silver lion adorned with smooth, aqua blue glass pieces from Bath Aqua Glass, the sponsors of Angele, whose owner Annette Martin designed and decorated the lion. Initially sprayed a sleek silver, individual pieces of different shades of blue glass were painstakingly added to the lion's body, following the contours of its mane and down two of his legs and tail. The larger, shaped glass pieces on the lion's side are inscribed with text reflecting the news of 2010. "Goodbye Gordon Brown Labour", "Greece went Bankrupt", "BA Air Strikes", "TV Goes Digital" and "Amy Williams Olympic Gold Medal in Skeleton", referring to the success of one of Bath's most successful sporting heroes.

The fabulous Killerbyte was created by award-winning artist Simon Spilsbury, who draws all the time, finding absurdity in the minutiae of life. One enthusiastic art director in the USA said "Spilsbury's drawings always jump out off the page and bite me on the ass"!
With a background in advertising and recent clients including Nike, Martell, Waterstones, Paramount Comedy Channel, Virgin, DHL, Cobra Beer, the Sunday Times & The Guardian, he had a two year column in The Independent with Dom Joly and regularly writes for the Sunday Times. Spilsbury set up a new image-making studio, Artbombers, with Richard Chant and picked up Gold at the British Illustrators' Awards in 2009 for their work on the Paramount Comedy Channel.
Sponsored by business data protection company Back Up Direct, Killerbyte has been keeping commuters at Bath Spa train station happy on their journeys throughout the summer as they pass the fabulously illustrated cartoon drawings of people running away from the mouth of the lion. Each time you study his humourous haunches you see something new and hilarious! By painting a growling mouth with teeth on his lion sculpture, Simon's lion has a completely different character to the rest of the pride and would be a fantastic addition to any household or office to keep up morale and put a smile on even the grumpiest of faces!

This wonderful celebration of marine life was painted by Alison Harrison and Jan Pitt and sponsored by the Freshford Village Shop & Cafe. Alison is a painter and sculptor whose work combines a natural understanding of colour and form. She studied Classical Greek Civilization as part of her degree and has always been interested in human origins and culture. Her varied styles and subject matter are necessarily eclectic, merging past and present to communicate her view of humanity.
Jan’s pastel work has featured in National Art magazines and she has run workshops and participated in eight successful two artist exhibitions in Wimbledon Village and in the Bath area. Her subject matter ranges widely including still life, surreal landscapes and the totally abstract. It comes from a lifetime of stored images, some recent and others from the dreams and imagination of childhood making the work fresh and, sometimes, deceptively naive. She rarely paints literally, as colour, shape and composition are more important to her than perspective.
Aqua Lion's beautiful blue and green colours instantly evoke images of our stunning underwater world, and shoals of fish, sharks, seahorses and a line of giant manta rays swim across his body in a timeless scene captured for a instant on the lion's form.

The sculptures have a steel thread inserted into the bottom of their feet into which a rod can be inserted for fixing to a plinth. Designed and painted by the sponsor's 7 and 12 year old children, the simple and well executed design belies the young age of its artists! Beautifully painted in gold, Autologise, sponsored by bio engineering firm reDERMIS, has appliques of tear shaped, gold and shades of blue metallic paper adorning his mane, with a hint of Egyptian in his black lined pale gold eyes and muzzle, with a minimalistic red design running down to his back foot. A proud and handsome lion who would make an excellent pet for a discerning lion fan.

The design of Big Game came from a desire to do something to benefit the lions in the wild. Made in collaboration with the wildlife charity Lion Aid plus a small army of helpers and professional talents, including Badger, the master joiner who constructed the shield. Named "Big Game" due to continued trophy hunting of lions in the wild, the head of the lion has been symbolically 'mounted’ on a trophy shield, and his body has been painted plain black, bearing stark golden written reminders of problems facing the lion in the wild. Back in the 1960s there were in excess of 200,000 lions on the African continent. Today, fewer than 20,000 lions remain, a dramatic decline of more than 90%. In the summer of 2010 there were probably more lions in Bath than there are in 75% of African countries. Messages on the lion include " Despite a known declining population, trophy hunters are still shooting more lions than ever", "A live male lion in the wild is priceless. His trophy on a wall can be bought for £30,000" and "The African lion is facing extinction during our lifetime".
In an ironic twist on the hunter and the hunted, the popular Bath pub "The Huntsman" became lion keeper and wheeled ‘Big Game’ into the pub at night to give him protection from the urban jungle outside.

Painted by Bath artist Julia Trickey, Bloom was completed whilst on display at the Bath Spring Flower Show. The inspiration for Bloom came from 7 year old Ilham Mohamed, a pupil at Hannah More Primary School in Bristol, who won a design a lion competition run by the lion's sponsor business advisory firm Deloitte. Painted as a cross section of a spring garden, with green legs and lower body and a veritable forest of spring daffodils swaying gentle in the wind adorning the lion's flanks. Interspersed with bluebells, violets and the occasional bumblebee, Bloom gives portrays a clean, fresh and bright image of a beautiful sunny day in the garden - a delight for gardeners and lion fans of all ages.

Top jewellery designer Nicholas Wylde has commissioned fellow jeweller turned artist and sculptor, Richard Twose to create a truly magnificent King of the beasts. Lovingly and painstakingly applied gold leaf and myriad semi-precious stones and coloured glass adorn the body while his crowning glory is a 2ft high bejewelled golden crown, with a golden orb studded with red coral suspended within. A proud and stunning sculpture that would look magnificent displayed in gardens, offices or stately homes across the land...

Bullion is worth his weight in gold! Sponsored by Principal Investment Management, and painted by Bath artist Catherine Beale, this lion is covered in painted images of coins featuring lion designs from across the world, he wears a "chain mail" coat made up of a variety of lion design coins which sits lightly over Bullion's purple shoulders. Fixed by three enormous lion coins at the front and side one is the familiar 10p piece and another a copy of an ancient Roman design. With a rich purple coat, adorned with lion coins and silver lion hallmarks, Bullion would appeal to art and big-cat lovers everywhere.

Corinthian is beautifully painted in acrylic with images of Bath buildings throughout the centuries, from Roman times to the present day. Adorned with frescoes of cherubs, towering stone columns through which timeless countryside vistas are enjoyed, a contemporary hard-hatted builder pours concrete concrete into a wheelbarrow alongside 17th century costumed figures looking out across the hills, a Roman messenger reading from a scroll and a 21st century birdwatcher following a swallow through his binoculars. Birds feature in a number of places on Corinthian, with a handsome bird standing proud over each eye. The rich, warm, glow of Bath stone, beautiful building facades and columns, through which countryside is easily visible, with sunny blue skies gives Corinthian a true flavour of Bath. Painted by Sophie Howard and sponsored by Newmans Building Conservation.

Bath is the headquarters of Norland Nannies and their new Norland Nursery has sponsored a lion named ‘Daisy Honeysuckle’ after the first child who registered at the nursery. Sam Lindup was chosen as the local artist to come up with a design for the Lion and what a wonderful job he made of it! Daisy is covered in over 1000 hand drawn and coloured illustrations of child related items including toys, clothes and animals for children to spot.
Before making it to her final destination, Daisy took a trip to Norland Nursery so that the children could get the first look; she, and Sam, proved very popular with all of the children! Daisy was positioned by the Pavilion café in Victoria Park, Bath and has been adored by children and families, both residents and visitors to Bath and Sam's extraordinarily detailed artwork would keep the smallest child to the oldest adult amused for hours studying the wonderful images that adorn the Lions of Bath's only "female" lion.

Dandelion, painted by Bath artist Louise Rushford and sponsored by id homes, reflects the world of art and interior design. The elegant and simple design, with fluffy dandelion clocks and subtle colours evoke the beauty and fragility of childhood, linking in to the children's charity Off the Record that the Lions of Bath event is supporting.

One of the most popular and striking members of the Lions of Bath pride, Dave has been sprayed with a sleek and shiny coat of metallic silver, but what really makes him stand out from the pride is his mane! Made up of hundreds of metal scalpels, bought directly from the medical scalpel factory before being sharpened, the scalpels glitter and sparkle in the sunshine. The idea encompasses the nobility and profound beauty of big cats but also makes plain the deadly potential of these astonishing beasts. The materials will withstand outdoor conditions and with a little light the blades sparkle, throwing light onto surrounding areas and surfaces. Dave was sponsored by The Apartment Company.
Dave has been stopping residents and tourists in their tracks as they peer closer and are amazed when they realise his mane is made of scalpels! Dave's artist, Nicola Donovan B.A. and M.A. Fine Art, based at Spike Island Bristol, exhibits nationally and internationally, with work held in the V&A archive, Falmouth Art Gallery and private collections and featured in 'The Guardian', 'The Telegraph', 'Time Out', 'Metro', 'The Observer', and various regional publications.
As Dave was displayed throughout the summer raised up on scaffolding safely away from the public, the scalpels did not pose a danger, however anyone interested in buying Dave should consider how they would display him safely before making a bid as, although the blades haven't been sharpened, their shape is such that they would still pose a hazard to small children. Like any valuable work of art, Dave should be seen and enjoyed at a safe distance...

Sponsored by the business advisory firm Deloitte, Earth Lion was painted by Sarah Grace, an Indirect Tax Manager at Deloitte, based on an idea and sketch by children at Hannah More Primary School in Bristol. Earth Lion's face represents the sun, with plants and roots growing up his legs and spreading their branches across his body, some blossoming into flower, all set against a gloriously blue sky.

Euan the Lion is the last of the "Bonus Pride" and could well be one of the most spectacular members of the Lions of Bath pride.
Currently being decorated by his sponsors, the Bath based advertising agency Ideas of the Mind, Euan will be coated in thousands of British and African lion-themed coins in a stunning design to draw attention to the value of this fast diminishing species in the wild.
Net profits from the sale of Euan will be donated to the Born Free Foundation, the charity founded by Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna.
Due to its royal, stately, and "king of the jungle" symbolism, the lion is one of the most frequent images to appear on coinage, from ancient times to the present, from the world's first coinage in Lydia c. 600 BC to the fractional euro coins of Finland today. Ideas of the Mind designs coins for a well known international Mint, which recently sold an 1839 ‘Una and the Lion’ coin for near to £20,000. With fewer than 20,000 lions now left in the wild - a reduction of approximately 90% since the 1970's, making the lion more endangered than the polar bear, each of the two thousand 10p coins that will adorn Euan's body, will represent just 10 lions that still remain in the wild.
This stunning coat of many coins will cover Euan's mane, torso and tail and will be iinterwoven with African lion coins, which have been sent direct from the Congo especially for Euan's design. The stunning centrepiece of the lion sculpture will be a large 24ct gold plated replica of the precious "Una and the Lion" coin positioned in pride of place in the centre of Euan's forehead. This fabulous gold coin is worth over £2,000 and will be sold with the lion at auction. The coin sits in a specially created base on the lion's forehead and is detachable for storage and transport.
Photographs of Euan will be posted on the Lions of Bath website news page at www.lionsofbath.com/news as he progresses, so please keep an eye on the site in the run up to his public debut at the "Lions Roar Goodbye" auction preview, when all 100+ lions will be displayed in one giant pride in front of the Royal Crescent in Bath for a weekend of public lion viewing and entertainment on of 9th & 10th October.

Sponsors Abel & Imray, a firm of leading patent and trade mark attorneys, were attracted by artist Nina Gronw-Lewis’ innovative idea of transforming the lion’s head into a Tiffany-style lamp, thus combining elements of design, art and technology. The image of a shining light bulb has often been associated with innovation and flashes of inspiration, as has the word “eureka”, literally meaning, “I’ve found it!“ The lion stands in his own roped, wooden enclosure and has a car battery hidden within the base to power LED lights within the lion's head (the front section of the base is removable for easy access and the lights are fed up into the head cavity on wire from a hole in the lion's foot. The buyer of the lion can easily remove the battery and LED lights and replace instead with a mains powered bulb or similar which can be fed up through the lion's foot, so that the light shines out from his eyes - a stunning effect, particularly at night!)
The wooden base and electrical/battery components make this an INDOOR LION, however he could be displayed outdoors if the electrical elements were removed.

"FloraLeo", the latest addition to the Lions of Bath pride, has been painted by leading British fashion designer Jeff Banks who incorporated five floral designs from his new Spring/Summer 2011 collection into the lion's design. Sponsored by Debenhams, FloraLeo was unveiled by Jeff Banks outside the new Debenhams store earlier this month before the store was officially opened at the new £360million shopping centre in the heart of Bath.
Jeff said "I've been asked to design many things in my years as a fashion designer, but I can say for certain I've never tackled a lion!". Helped by young members of the public who had gathered for the opening of the store, Jeff then flung the red drape off the lion to reveal its beautiful artwork before cutting the ribbon to official open the store, with the Mayor of Bath.
FloraLeo has been much admired since his public debut, so much so that some overardent lion fans decided to take him off on a private safari and ran off with him to the train station, where they were thankfully apprehended by vigilant First Great Western security guards!

The glittering circus themed lion, Frank Fantstikous, was sponsored MASCo WALCOT, Britain's leading architectural reclamation company, designed by Giffords Circus and painted by artist Jacqui Harrison. This Big Top cat is a favourite amongst children in particular, with his fabulous face and fetching ring-master moustache, colourful bejewelled body and glittering mane. Frank is not the lion so much as the lion tamer and is a very characterful lion who has been standing on the pavement outside Masco in the artisan quarter of Bath surveying the world go by and becoming a much loved sight for passing pedestrians and motorists alike!

Sir Peter Blake has painted many things in his time, but painting a lion is definitely a first! Probably most famous for his iconic "Sgt Pepper" album cover for The Beatles and his connection with the music industry, his spectacular work has inspired artists for decades and is represented in major collections throughout the world.
The unique "Graffiti Lion" features bold geometric patterns and reflections of the music world from the 1950's and 60's, with names such as Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, the Everly Brothers, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and "Elvis Lives" written on his mane and "Elvis " in large black text down his leg. There is also a focus towards his Alphabet series, with the letters of the alphabet written across the ridge of his back and "I Love You" and "Love across his body. Other images include a wonderful drawing of "4 ladies dancing", a man standing on a ball with two men on his head entitled "3 men up", a mermaid, a pot of gold, a lion cub, a rainbow over a ship at sea and a serpent snaking across the lion's back. Peter has signed "Peter Blake 2010" across his left flank and a large "Peter Blake" on his right, and added the British and American flags on each temple. This is a truly unique work from Britain's King of pop art and one that will take pride of place in any art lover's collection.

Inspired by the four lions on the emblem of India symbolising power, courage, pride and confidence, and the mighty yet graceful Indian elephant, dressed in exquisite regalia. King of Bling sports a fabulous array of painted silver armour, chains, tassels, and gemstones, and judging by his smile, he's not afraid to show them off! Sponsored by The Silver Shop of Bath and painted by artist Jane Robinson.

This stunning mosaic lion was created by mosaic artist Joanna Dewfall who, with the lion's sponsors, Mandarin Stone, felt that the Lions of Bath sculpture offered the perfect opportunity to use some of Mandarin's beautiful stone tesserae to create a 3d version of an ancient Roman mosaic lion. Most appropriately, Leo Aquae Sulis ("Lion of Bath" in Latin) has been displayed inside the world famous Roman Baths in pride of place on the balcony overlooking the steaming King's Bath and looks as though he has padded straight out of scene from ancient Rome and would be a fabulous addition to gardens, stately homes or guarding prestigious buildings, as would so many of the Lions of Bath pride.

Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts) were a short-lived and loose grouping of early 20th century Modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. While Fauvism as a style began around 1900 and continued beyond 1910, the movement as such lasted only three years, 1905–1907, and had three exhibitions.[1] The leaders of the movement were Henri Matisse and André Derain.
Les Fauves de Bath was painted by 19 year old Leroy Harding from Bath in the Fauvism style using acrylics to create a colourful abstract design with stunning geometric patterns onto this wild beast of Bath. Les Fauves was sponsored by Town & Country Mortgage Services and has been a bright and colourful fixture on the grass outside City of Bath College where Leroy will be studying art this year. However, Les Fauves' natural habitat was recently requisitioned by the council to make way for a bus stop, so "Les Fauves de Bath" has had to mark new terrtory outside the college entrance where he'll be able to keep an eye on the students as they enter and leave the building before moving on to pastures new...

This stunning lion is a masterpiece. Painted by two talented book illustrators for Librarius's sponsor Waterstones, each decorated one side of the lion, with their designs meeting up in the middle! Artist Tess Farlow illustrated one side and Hannah Shaw has painted her side in an "Extreme Reading Circus" theme, with a fabulous collection of wonderful creatures performing mind boggling stunts whilst reading a book. A circus rabbit is leaping through a flaming hoop, whilst still reading his novel, a snail balances on an inflatable ball whilst throwing a book up in the air and catching it with his antenna, a weight-lifting sheep still manages to hold a book under one thumb to read whilst lifting heavy dumbells, there are monkeys, giraffes, a trapeze flying raccoon holding a zebra by his feet whilst he reads his book upside down, and many more glorious images that are a joy to all who have the pleasure of studying the humourous designs.
