This beautiful elephant named Commedia was created by Betty Jonker.
"For my elephant "Commedia", I drew inspiration from the Venetian Commedia dell'Arte, a form of theatre that was prevalent in the 16th and 17th centuries and heavily employed the use of masks. The masks worn by the butterfly women on stilts are depicted on "Commedia's" head and flanks. I love sharp contrasts and contrasting colours, which is why "Commedia" has a warm and a cold side. I purposely paint human eyes in order to put the viewer off balance."

Voor mijn olifant "Commedia" werd ik geïnpireerd door het Venetiaanse Commedia dell'Arte, een typentoneel uit de 16e en 17e eeuw waarin veel met maskers werd gewerkt. De maskers van de steltlopende vlindervrouwen vind je terug op de flanken en op de kop van "Commedia" Ik hou van sterke contrasten en contrastrijke kleuren, daarom heeft "Commedia" een warme en koele kant. Bewust schilder ik menselijke ogen om de kijker op het verkeerde been te zetten."
