Kivuli Trust logo

'Kivuli' itself is a Swahili word meaning 'shade' or 'protection'. We build classrooms and boarding houses for children with mental disability (the 'forgotten children') on the grounds of existing schools in Kenya.

Our primary goal at Kivuli Trust is to change the perception of mental disability in East Africa. Our theory is simple; provide the facilities for children with mental disability and the parents of these children will find us. Build these facilities on the grounds of existing schools and we facilitate playground integration with
able-bodied and able-minded children at a very young age. Integration at a young age means that children will grow up exposed to mental disability and be more accepting of it, which in turn will filter back into the wider community. This is vital in a society which predominantly views disability as a curse or the manifestation of sin in a previous life.
