Fine Cell Work is a social enterprise which trains men and women in prison to do professional needlework that sells internationally and to organisations such as the V&A museum and English Heritage. The prisoners are paid for their work.
The charity currently employs 340 inmates at any one time and have had more than 60 requests from new prisons in the last four years. There is a great need for constructive and creative work in our prisons, where the lack of meaningful activity often serves to further cripple people with extremely high rates of mental illness and poor educational and social skills.
Craftwork in prison can serve as an opportunity for prisoners to discover a softer, more constructive and reflective side to themselves. It can turn them into real contributors with a sense of pride and self worth.
